15 MayUsing Outdoor Solar Lights

Most everyone has seen outdoor solar lights on a pathway at some point. In fact, there’s a good chance that a half-broken set of plastic ones exist nearby. What many people might not realize are the many different types and uses for outdoor solar lights. Technology and innovative designs have made the use of these lights much more interesting than simple pathway lights.

Solar accent lights can be found that are used for pathway lighting, to outline entrance areas or to enhance any dark area. Accent lights are also useful for bringing light to particular areas that need to be illuminated, such as flowerbeds or water features. This energy is transferred to the light that then powers on when the sun goes down.

Water fixtures are not left out when it comes to solar lights; today, there are solar lights that can be installed underneath the water as well as in floating versions for the top of the water. Unlike electrical water lights, these lights do not have to be installed by a contractor, the homeowner is able to install them on their own.

13 MayStormwater Runoff: the Hidden Water Pollutant

Stormwater runoff is one of the gravest threats to the environment today. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 21% of impaired lakes and 45% of impaired estuaries were caused by stormwater runoffs. However, not many people know about this phenomenon, and how they even unwittingly contribute to the problem.

So what is stormwater runoff?

To understand why storm runoffs are destructive, we must first have a basic understanding of how the earth’s water cycle works. In the earth’s water cycle, rain or storm water falls and is absorbed by different sources – porous ground, topsoil, bodies of water, vegetation, etc. In the natural environment, the nutrients in these different sources manage to “treat” the water via natural processes. Once “treated”, the water evaporates back, becomes clouds, and the cycle continues as it returns to earth as rainwater again.

Yet because of massive urbanization, the avenues through which water can be naturally treated are disappearing. For example, grounds that used to absorb storm water have been paved over to make roads, driveways and parking lots. These roads cannot absorb rainwater, and simply redirect the water to the drainage system. That drainage system does not treat the water, and it merely redirects it back to various bodies of water.

A similar situation happens on rooftops of manufacturing facilities. Because of the various processes involved in manufacturing, pollutants such as grease and other substances evaporate from the inside of the facility and get stuck in the rooftop vents. Once rain falls, these pollutants can get washed out from the vents and the contaminated water ends up in storm drains. Like the road drainage system, these storm drains do not always have treatment mechanisms, and the untreated water ends up in lakes or streams.

How can we stop stormwater runoff?

Of course, it’s simply unrealistic to just say remove all roads and other surfaces that hinder the absorption of storm water. Instead, there are several methods that can be employed to help minimize the amount of stormwater runoff that ends up in streams, rivers and lakes.

One major method advised for industries is the installation of stormwater runoff protection equipment. There are several types available, ranging from simple drain plugs and inserts to filtering machines and rooftop containment solutions. Not only do these control and manage stormwater runoff, but they can also help in protecting property. In cases where there are no rooftop containment solutions available, the pollutants in the stormwater runoff also contribute in the destruction of the roof. One good example is that of grease, which can cause bitumen membranes in roofing to wrinkle, swell and even blister.

There are also several tips that ordinary homeowners can utilize to help reduce this kind of pollution. Instead of using chemicals to de-ice a driveway, for instance, sand can be used as a decent substitute. Fertilizer use must also be minimized, as excess fertilizer mixed into stormwater runoff can trigger an overgrowth of aquatic vegetation.

With these simple steps, everyone can all contribute to the reduction of stormwater runoff and water pollution to help save the environment.

12 MayHow An Erosion Mat Keeps Slopes From Disappearing

Erosion is a problem in almost every environment all over the world. To combat this, erosion mats are used. If an erosion mat is to be utilized, then there are two types to choose from.

For a non-channel area, an erosion mat that can be rolled out to protect the topsoil from rainfall and wind damage should be used. This is a covering to protect the barren soil from wind and water erosion. The covering is usually made of a biodegradable substance like straw or coconut fiber, but other forms of plant life can be used. They are usually held together with biodegradable matting or netting component. This is also made of a biodegradable material so that it only lasts until vegetation has established a root system and hold the dirt in place. Another effect of using an erosion mat is that moisture is retained with this form of covering. This side bonus is a major contributor to the generation of surrounding vegetation. This is mainly used on small sloping areas. The greater the slope, the more netting material is necessary to keep the soil in place with a protective covering.

Another method is a channel erosion mat. These are made up of the same substance as a non-channel mat, but also include wood chips. Unlike the non-channel erosion mats, this type of mat is specifically designed to withstand during sudden formations of channeled water. These types of mats are also very effective in temporary channels or channels that have inconsistent water present.

This erosion matting is rolled and put into place for the same reason as the non-channel mat, which is to give vegetation a chance to establish a root system. There are three different types of classes of this protective mat. The right class for your application will be determined by the sheer stress needed and duration for the mat to remain before returning to its natural state.

Pool Blaster Max from Water Tech Corp, is a rechargeable battery operated pool, spa or hot tub vacuum, which works independent of the filtration system. There are no hoses to connect to your filter system, no electrical cords to plug in or the need to backflush your pool after vacuuming it. The Pool Blaster Max earned from the industry’s legend, "Pool & Spa News", the prestigious "Reader’s Choice Best New Product award" upon its launch.

Pool Blaster Max Features

Pool Blaster Max, formerly known as the Pool Buster Max, operates by a rechargeable, five (5) year battery which features a quick-connect plug. The battery will last about 1,000 hours or 200 hours per year, which is more hours than most owners will need to use it. It features a hi-flow vacuum motor which filters about 40 to 60 gallons of water every minute. The on-board dirt, sand and debris catcher contains a large re-usable filter bag, which allows for better suction. It easily connects to any telescoping pole and maneuvers easily around any pool, spa or hot tub’s floor, edges and walls. It easily converts into a hand-held vacuum for cleaning stairs or steps as well as around any drains and corners. It has a one (1) inch wide diameter spot cleaning nozzle and a built-in hanging storage notch. The Pool Blaster Max offers more power than the Aqua Broom and Catfish due to its higher vacuum motor and larger debris catcher.

Pool Blaster Max – My Personal Review

For the past four years, I have been using the Aqua Broom. It just recently died and I decided to upgrade to the Pool Blaster Max. I have used it several times and I totally love this simple to use pool vacuum. It cleans my pool so much better than the Aqua Broom. Now, don’t get me wrong, the Aqua Broom is also a great investment, but it had some flaws. For instance, while it would pick up dirt, it also push some of it around. But, with the Pool Blaster Max, I don’t have this problem. It picks up the dirt, pine needles and other debris and so easily.

Just the other day, one of my family members used the Pool Blaster Max for the first time. When I asked, “What did you think of the Pool Blaster Max?”, I received the following reply: “Oh my God! It works great. It actually pick up the dirt and did not push it around like the old pool vacuum. Also, I didn’t have to stop and empty the filter. What a difference. I just loved it.”

It was amazing to hear those words for that was my thoughts of the Pool Blaster Max as well.
